Corten Steel Care

Corten steel is designed to naturally weather over time, forming a protective rust-like patina that gives it its distinctive look. This outer layer acts as a barrier, protecting the steel beneath and allowing it to last for many years with minimal to no maintenance.

During the early stages of weathering, Corten steel may release some rust runoff, which can stain surrounding surfaces such as concrete, pavers or decking. For this reason, we recommend allowing the steel to weather in a place where runoff will not cause unwanted staining.

Over time, the steel will stabilize and develop a rich, even patina that requires little to no upkeep.

Corten steel is designed to be durable, low-maintenance, and to age naturally and beautifully in outdoor environments.

Corten care guide F.A.Q.

At Kiwi Corten Co., we believe in creating lasting beauty with minimal fuss. Our Corten art is designed for resilience and natural elegance. Here, we address some of the most common questions about caring for your Corten steel, ensuring you can enjoy its unique charm for years to come.

What's the most important thing to know about your new Corten art?

Your art comes in raw Corten steel, specifically chosen for its unique weathering properties. The most important thing to understand is that it will age naturally and beautifully over time, especially when exposed to the diverse New Zealand weather. This process develops a stable, rust-like protective layer, known as a patina, which not only gives it its distinctive aesthetic but also protects the steel from further corrosion.

How do I look after my Corten garden art?

The best part about Corten is its low maintenance! You truly don't need to do anything special to look after your Corten art. It's designed to be self-protecting and maintenance-free. The steel itself does the work for you, forming its own durable barrier against the elements. Simply place it where you desire and let nature do the rest, allowing you more time to enjoy your garden.

Are there any common worries with Corten art, like rust marks on paving, and what's your advice?

One of the most common questions about Corten steel is whether it can leave rust marks on surrounding surfaces. During the early weathering process, Corten steel can release small amounts of rust runoff as the protective patina develops. This is normal and temporary part of the steel's natural process.

To minimize the chance of staining, we recommend placing on gravel, soil, garden beds or grass where possible. If installing on concrete, pavers or decking, allowing the piece to weather outdoors for a short period first, or sealing nearby surfaces, and help prevent marks.

Once the Corten steel has fully developed its patina, runoff significantly reduces and the piece becomes very low maintenance.

Corten steel is designed to age beautifully and naturally in outdoor environment's, and with thoughtful placement it will provide a long-lasting feature in your garden.
